- Warp and weft
-
The warp is the set of yarns stretched lengthwise on the loom, held taut before weaving begins. The weft is the yarn a weaver passes crosswise, over and under the warp threads, building the fabric row by row. Warp threads must be strong enough to bear repeated tension, while weft threads usually carry the colour and the pattern. Nearly every technique in this gallery, ikat, brocade, jamdani, is defined by what is done to the warp, the weft, or both, before or during weaving.
- Handloom and powerloom
-
A handloom is worked entirely by a weaver's own hands and feet, with no motor driving it. A powerloom is mechanised and can copy a handloom design, producing it far faster and far cheaper, since handloom's slow, manual process cannot compete with a machine on speed or cost. This is why the Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for Production) Act, 1985, legally reserves certain woven articles, sarees, dhotis, towels and shawls among them, for handloom production alone.
- Ikatइकत
-
Ikat is a resist-dye technique applied to yarn before weaving, not to finished cloth. Sections of thread are tightly bound so dye cannot reach them, the yarn is dyed, the bindings removed, and the pattern only fully appears once weaving begins. Single ikat resists either the warp or the weft alone. Double ikat resists and dyes both warp and weft to a matching design, so the two must align with extreme precision on the loom, the most demanding form, practised commercially in only India, Indonesia and Japan.
- Extra-weft brocade
-
Brocade is woven, not embroidered. Alongside the main weft that builds the base cloth, the weaver throws a second, extra weft thread only where the pattern requires it, skipping across the rest of the width on the underside. This extra weft, often coloured silk or metallic zari, sits on top of the ground weave, giving the motif a raised, textured look. Because it is added row by row purely for pattern, not structure, a single elaborate brocade piece can take anywhere from two weeks to six months to complete.
- Zari
-
Zari is a metallic yarn traditionally made by flattening a fine strip of real gold or silver and wrapping it around a core thread of silk or cotton. Woven in as an extra weft, zari is what gives Banarasi, Kanchipuram and many other brocades their gold or silver shine and their weight. Genuine pure zari is expensive and now rare, and most zari sold today is tested or synthetic, a distinction that GI standards for some weaves, Kanchipuram among them, regulate by specifying a minimum silver and gold content.
